Niko Pirosmanishvili Museum

About us

The museum was opened in the house where the famous Georgian primitivist painter Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) spent the last years of his life. In 1984 the first secretary of the city committee of the Communist Party (A. Azirov) initiated the opening of the museum.

The fund of the place is small. It consists of several hundred items, including a few pictures, copies of other works and personal memorabilia. In the halls of the museum you can see the paintings such as "The Deer", "Margarita", "Rustic Wedding" and other works of the artist.

Constant poverty made him to create signs for dukhans and decorate them with drawings (eg "Kakheti wine"). Furnishings are well preserved in the apartment including the desk, couch and closet of Pirosmanishvili as well as the carpet made by his mother. In the 1990s the museum was looted and copper utensils with cookware of the artist were stolen.

Museum prepared an edition of the Rustaveli's poem "The Knight in the Panther's Skin" with illustrations by N. Pirosmani. Also a new museum catalogue is being worked on.
