About us

State Drama Theatre in Chugureti district of Tbilisi is a landmark for the cultural life of Georgia and the former Soviet republics. It was founded in 1928 thanks to the efforts of the director and reformer of the Georgian theater Kote Mardzhanishvili. He was invited from Russia to reform the theatrical life, and made a figure in its development. He was the one who created the modern Georgian theater which combines an antique, classic and modern drama in incredible harmony.

During the existence of Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre it has produced about 400 performances, most of which had great social importance and ideas expressed at certain stages of artistic development.

Spectators can enjoy the plays over the season, which lasts from September to the end of June. To date, there are three stages in the theater: a large one (with 436 seats), a small one (with 102 seats) and a new one (with 136 seats). Performances begin at 7 and 8 pm, and on the stage can be seen a permanent troupe of actors and guest stars. The most popular persons today are Beck Goderdzhishvili, Zaza Goduadze, Nino Tandilashvili and others.
The most visited performances are productions of classical works, including "Hamlet," "A Christmas Carol" and "The Snow Queen", as well as author shows like "Drunk Cherry" and "The Wall".

It should be noted that the theater holds a museum, where you can view and purchase memorabilia of directors, playwrights and artists. There you can find layouts, sketches and drafts of original plays, as well as works by contemporary artists.
